Have you heard of Energy and Heat Recovery Ventilators? They are a great addition to your home comfort system, allowing you to gain the benefits of fresh outdoor air without taxing your comfort system. Find out more about this technology, and how it compliments your existing heating and cooling system.
What is an ERV and How Does It Work?
An ERV, or Energy Recovery Ventilator, is used to remove old, stale, sometimes unhealthy air from your home, while simultaneously introducing fresh, pre-treated air from outside.
Stale indoor air enters the ERV and fresh prefiltered outdoor air enters the ERV at the same time. Both airstreams go through a heat & humidity recovery core inside the ERV. The stale air leaving and fresh air coming in does not mix. The ERV core only allows the temperature and humidity to move across. Recycling the energy used to cool incoming fresh air during the summer and warm the fresh air in the winter. Giving you a fresh indoor environment even on extreme days.

What is an HRV and How Does it Work?
HRVs, or Heat Recovery Ventilators, operate like ERVs, with one major difference – they do not transfer humidity between airstreams. But they do capture heating and cooling energy from the outgoing air stream and transfer it to the incoming fresh air, like an ERV. This means the fresh air entering your home is tempered, reducing your comfort system’s workload.
Benefits of ERVs and HRVs
ERVs and HRVs provide homeowners with some amazing benefits such as:
Fresh Air Without Discomfort
Fresh air from the window brings in environmental pollutants and forces your heating and cooling system to work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home. With an ERV/HRV you enjoy the benefits of fresh air without the pollutants and added strain to your furnace or air conditioning. ERV/HRVs are usually installed near your furnace or air handler and tied into existing ductwork.
Energy Savings
The recovery core in the ventilator recovers up to 75% of thermal energy from outgoing air to pre-condition incoming air, thus providing energy savings. These benefits can not only create better energy-efficiency, but also help your wallet!
